As the temperature gauge tickles the mid-thirties there’s only one thing to do in the city: ice cream. The summer has been hot and languid this year, heat bouncing off the buildings and stifling the breeze. Sure, there’s the Rhine to jump into and float along, but it’s not exactly an office-friendly quick fix to the sweltering conditions. So, ice cream.
Forget Mövenpick, in Basel, there’s only one place to go. Glatscharia Üna uses fresh milk from Alpine cows and local fruit to concoct a series of inventive and delicious flavours. Their tiny stall is tucked away behind the university, but once you find it, you’re rewarded with a veritable treasure trove of frozen treats. The consistency is more gelato than ice cream, and the flavours range from old favourites to new concoctions. The fior di latte is a personal top pick, paired with a rich dark chocolate or a brightly-hued, tart and creamy raspberry. Mmmm…
